Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (which means ‘Teacher’).”  –John 20:16

During the time of Jesus, the term Rabbi indicated “My Master” or “My Teacher.” However, there were three variations, each with a greater degree of import: Rab meaning Master or Teacher; Rabbi meaning My Master or My Teacher; and Rabboni meaning My Great Master, the greatest designation of all.

After the resurrection, Mary Magdalene weeps at the loss of her Lord. She turns and sees Jesus but does not recognize Him. He then calls her name and she immediately recognizes Him and calls out to her “Great Teacher.”
